A number is just
a number until you see
the pattern.

A retention cohort table is a good example of why visualisation matters. The raw numbers tell you retention rates. The heatmap tells you something the table hides โ€” that a specific acquisition period produced users who behaved completely differently, and that the drop-off concentrates in a particular week.

This is what we mean by reading the truth. The data has a shape. Our job is to find it, show it clearly, and turn it into the decision it implies โ€” which channel to scale, which week to intervene, which cohort to study.
